Dealer add-ons to question before you sign

What the extras on your quote really are, which ones are optional, and exactly what to say to remove them.

Updated November 2026 · Educational information, not legal or financial advice.

Dealer add-ons are products or services added to your deal on top of the vehicle price. Some have real value for some buyers. Many are high-profit extras that are pre-installed or pre-printed on the paperwork so they look required. They usually aren't.

The one question to ask"Which of these items are optional, and can you send me the price without them?" Ask it before you are in the finance office, and get the answer in writing.

Add-ons you'll often see on the sales quote

Add-onWhat it claims to doWhat to consider
Nitrogen-filled tiresSteadier tire pressureAir is already about 78% nitrogen. Many tire shops fill nitrogen cheaply or free.
Paint and fabric protectionCoating against stains and fadingOften a sealant you can buy for far less. Read what the warranty actually covers.
VIN etchingTheft deterrentDIY kits are inexpensive. Check if it lowers your insurance; often it doesn't.
Anti-theft / tracking packagesRecovery if stolenCompare with what the car already includes and with standalone options.
Window tint, wheel locks, mud flapsAccessoriesPrice them at an independent shop. If already installed, negotiate the price.
"Dealer prep" or "reconditioning"Getting the car readyOn new cars, prep is typically covered by the manufacturer's destination and dealer margin.

Products offered in the finance (F&I) office

After you agree on a price, the finance manager will usually offer protection products. These can be useful, but prices are often negotiable and you can usually buy them later or elsewhere.

Extended warranty (vehicle service contract)

Covers certain repairs after the factory warranty ends. Check who backs it, what's excluded, the deductible, and whether you can cancel for a prorated refund. Manufacturer-backed plans can often be bought from other dealers of the same brand.

GAP coverage

Pays the gap between your loan balance and the car's value if it is totaled or stolen. It matters most with a small down payment or a long loan. Your auto insurer or credit union may offer it for less.

Prepaid maintenance, tire-and-wheel, key replacement

Compare the price with what those services would cost you directly over the years you'll own the car.

How to handle add-ons

  1. Ask for the itemized out-the-door price before visiting.
  2. Mark every line you didn't request.
  3. Ask for those lines removed. If they are "already installed," ask for them at no charge or for a lower price.
  4. In the finance office, it is fine to say "no thanks" and take the brochure home.
  5. Check the final contract: add-ons sometimes reappear inside the amount financed.

Common questions

Are dealer add-ons mandatory?

Optional products should not be required to buy the car. If a dealer says an add-on is required, ask them to show you where that is stated in writing, and compare quotes with other dealers.

Can I cancel an extended warranty or GAP after buying?

Many service contracts and GAP products can be cancelled for a prorated refund. Check the cancellation section of your contract and contact the provider.

Does buying add-ons help me get approved for a loan?

No. Buying optional products should not be a condition of loan approval. If you're told otherwise, ask for it in writing.
